On May 14, 2025, the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced significant advancements in drone regulations. FAA’s proposed rules related to Beyond Visual Line of Sight Operations (BVLOS) and restricting UAS operations at a fixed site facility have been submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) marking a significant step forward.
These rules aim to facilitate additional low-altitude drone operations, enhancing safety and efficiency in U.S. airspace. This initiative will pave the way for drones to operate beyond visual line of sight without needing special permissions, boosting sectors including agriculture and emergency response. The proposed rule introduces a streamlined process for granting special airworthiness certificates to drones up to 1,320 pounds, ensuring they meet new design and operational standards. Additionally, it outlines new pilot certification requirements and establishes guidelines for drone cargo delivery services. The Secretary of Transportation highlighted the importance of collaboration with industry partners as essential to achieving these goals.
